Textbook:

Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for Solving Elliptic and Parabolic Equations, by Bétrice Rivière, SIAM (ISBN: 978-0-898716-56-6)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is aimed to both practical users and researchers who are interest in discontinuous Galerkin methods for scientific and engineering computing. We shall focus on the numerical solutions for the elliptic, parabolic and wave equations by means of discontinuous Galerkin methods. In addition, we may also pay attention to finite element/finite volume algorithm abstraction and software development by virtue of an automated finite element/finite volume program generation. Some classical and modern engineering problems such as fluid dynamics and fuel cell dynamics will be demonstrated as well.

PREREQUISITE: MATH 466/MAT 665 or the equivalence are the minimum, MATH 765/766 are the optimal.

TEST AND GRADING POLICY: Homework are assigned on the biweekly basis,  and the final grade is based on the performance of the routine homework, as well as the final research paper of which the topic will be assigned to the student two weeks before the semester ends.

Final course letter grades will be assigned as follows:

A 95-100
A- 90-94
B+ 86-89
B 80-85
C+ 76-79
C 70-75
D 60-69
F 0-59

NOTE: Your grade will be based EXCLUSIVELY on the homework as well as the performance of research paper.

CLASS POLICIES:

HOMEWORK:

The homework problems that you should work after each lecture are on the assignment list. You are required to do the homework outside of class for each section after we have completed the lesson.  Homework are collected on a biweekly basis.

ATTENDANCE:

You are required to attend class regularly. If you miss a class for any reason, you are responsible for all missed lectures, materials and announcements made in class.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

Academic integrity is the pursuit of scholarly activity in an open, honest and responsible manner. Academic integrity is a basic guiding principle for all academic activity at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and all members of the University community are expected to act in accordance with this principle. Consistent with this expectation, the University's Code of Conduct states that all students should act with personal integrity, respect other students' dignity, rights and property, and help create and maintain an environment in which all can succeed through the fruits of their efforts.

Academic integrity includes a commitment not to engage in or tolerate acts of falsification, misrepresentation or deception. Such acts of dishonesty violate the fundamental ethical principles of the University community and compromise the worth of work completed by others. Based on the University's Student Academic Misconduct Policy, a range of academic sanctions may be taken against a student who engages in academic dishonesty.
